Republic of Uzbekistan
Geographical location
and ecological zones of the republic
The Republic of Uzbekistan is located between rivers Amu-Daria and Syr-Daria in
the temperate zone of deserts in the Central Asia
The territory of the republic is divided for the
four zones corresponding to geomorphologic levels: plains (deserts),
foothills, mountains and high-mountains.
The total area of the republic is 44,5 Mln Ha. Considering the
ecological situation there are discerned the following zones: 0 (zero) –
zone with admissible ecological situation – 11.8 Mln
Ha (26.5%); 1 - zone with critical
ecological situation – 16.1 Mln Ha (36.2%); 2 –
zone with emergency ecological situation – 12.9 Mln
Ha (29.0%); and 3 – zone of ecological disaster – 3.7 Mln
Ha (8.3%).
The total number of the main
forests-forming species growing in the republic consists of the following
species: wood species – 68; bushes – 320; semi-bushes – 134; grasses –
2953 species.
The areal
of extension of forest resources
The total area of forest fund in the
Republic of Uzbekistan is 8.08 Mln Ha,
including:

in desert zone – 7.1 Mln Ha consisting of Haloxylon,
Salsola, Calligonum
and Tamarix;
-
in mountain zone – 802.0
thousand Ha consisting of Juniperus seravschanica, Pistacia, Juglans regia, and wild
trees;
-
riverside forests – 84.0
thousand Ha consisting of Populus, Salix, Elagnus and Tamarix;
-
valley zone – 52.0 thousand Ha consisting of Populus, Ulmus, Platanus and other quick-growing species.
Forest ownership
The forests in Uzbekistan are the property of the Republic. The main part of them is
assigned to the Head Department of Forestry and totals 8.08 Mln Ha. The rest forests are the property of Khokimiyat of Tashkent Region (600.0 thousand Ha),
State Committee of Nature (90.0 thousand Ha) and Uzbek Scientific
Research Institute of Forestry (2.5 thousand Ha)
